Album Information
B'Day is the second studio album by R&B singer-songwriter Beyoncé, released by Columbia Records on September 1, 2006 outside North America, on September 4, 2006 worldwide and on September 5, 2006 in Canada and the United States.
After wrapping up her role Deena on the upcoming film Dreamgirls, Knowles had "bottled up so many things, so many emotions, so many ideas" that she decided to leave her vacation early to record the album in a timespan of two weeks only, recording three songs a day - much to Columbia Record's surprise. At that time Knowles had booked the whole Sony Studios, simultaneously recording with an "all-star team of producers", including Rodney Jerkins, Rich Harrison, The Neptunes, Stargate, Cameron Wallace, Walter Milsap and Swizz Beatz. Rapper T.I. also joined the sessions to record a verse for "Upgrade U", but like Lil Wayne he did not make the cut on B'Day.
The track "Resentment" is a cover of a song previously recorded by Victoria Beckham. The track, which was also covered by Jazmine Sullivan in 2004, appeared on the The Real Beckhams DVD release as a bonus song. The track features slightly altered lyrics (and thus a writing credit for Knowles), but the bulk of the song remains the same as Beckham's version.
Knowles named the album B'Day because it was released worldwide on her birthday. When BBC Radio 1's Chris Moyles pointed out the similarity of her album's title to "bidet", a bathroom fixture common in much of Europe but rare in the U.S., Beyoncé said, "I wasn't thinking about a bidet and if I would have thought about it I probably would have just named it Birthday or just B".
