Britney SpearsBritney talks about how she has found true love, is ready for her closeup, and won't check caller ID when someone rings claiming to be Michael Jackson...
Following in the footsteps of her hero, Madonna, Britney Spears has leaped from the concert stage to the silver screen. Her movie debut will coincide with a new album featuring a song co-written by her boyfriend, 'NSYNC's Justin Timberlake.

Sonny and Cher. Kurt and Courtney. The Captain and Tennille. Donny and Marie. Justin and Britney? Don't laugh — the first lady of pop and her crown prince just might be the musical match of the new millennium.
When Britney's third album is released on November 6, we'll all hear the dynamic duo's first piece of work together, a track called "What It's Like to Be Me." 'NSYNC heartthrob and Brit boyfriend Justin Timberlake co-wrote, co-produced, and sang backing vocals on the song. The disc finds Spears continuing to experiment with her sound. In addition to the love-connection tune, the still-untitled disc features the Neptunes-produced first single, "I'm a Slave 4 U," and a cover of the classic rock tune "I Love Rock 'n' Roll." The singer also worked with old friend and pop maestro Max Martin and red-hot electronic producer BT, and she even roped in songwriting help from Dido. Spears is also slated to make her big-screen debut this year in an as-yet-untitled road flick.
During a recent interview MTV Latin America's Ruth Infarinato discovered that Britney has found true love, is ready for her closeup, and won't check caller ID when someone rings claiming to be Michael Jackson.
You just finished your first movie. Have you been approached about acting opportunities before, or is it something you yourself recently chose to get into?
Britney Spears: It was something I was looking to do. I was looking at a bunch of different scripts, but this was the one that really caught my eye. It's just really heartfelt. I saw it for the first time [the other day and] I was really, really excited. It was bizarre seeing yourself on the big screen! I was watching it like, "Oh, my gosh!" I cried in it. It was so weird when I was watching it ... I'm not me. I'm not Britney Spears. I'm this dorky girl named Lucy. I don't have much makeup on, and I'm not really glamorous. It was just bizarre to see me playing someone else. I got so lost in the character.
What scene in the script made you think, "Yeah, OK, this is great. I've got to do it"?
Spears: It's a teen movie, but it's talking about real issues that teenagers deal with all the time. One of the girls has an eating disorder. One of the girls was date-raped. I'm always wanting to please my father [in the movie]. I want to do what he wants me to do when I should just do what makes me happy. The whole movie is about this journey that the three best friends take, finding ourselves and what we want out of life and getting our friendship back. Friends are all you have at the end of the day. When your boyfriend breaks up with you, who do you call? Your girlfriend. I just love that message.
Are we going to see you singing in the movie?
Spears: There's a lot of music in it. It's a road trip, so we're always listening to rock music, fun music, pop music.
Will your album have any tracks from the movie?
Spears: Yeah, "Overprotected" and "I'm Not a Girl."
Everybody who shoots movies talks about how you have to wait hours between scenes. Was that hard for you?
Spears: Yeah. It's totally different than what I'm used to. I'm used to being on the road and touring, going here and there. It was a very good experience for me, because I got to slow down a bit. There's a lot of waiting around, which was good for me. I did yoga and I read a lot of books. It was almost like a vacation.
Do you see yourself doing this in the future?
Spears: I would love to. I gained a lot of confidence. I'm so confident onstage, but it was my first movie. I didn't know what I was doing, but I proved to myself that I could do it. Now with the next one, I'm like, "I really want to challenge myself."
Do you find similarities between your life and this character?
Spears: No. I think Lucy and Britney are very different, but there are some things that are similar. Lucy is very naive. She's very dorky. I hope I'm not that dorky, but Britney keeps to herself a lot. She writes in her journal a lot. I do that, too.
You recorded a song with your boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, for your new album. How was that?
Spears: Justin and [choreographer/songwriter] Wade Robson wrote it for me, and it's called "What It's Like to Be Me." It's a very cool song. It's very rock, and Justin did the background vocals on it.
How was it working together?
Spears: I was a little nervous at first. I'm used to going in there and it's like work. It was kind of awkward at first, 'cause I was nervous doing my vocals [in front of him] for some reason. I was like, "Ooh." But then, I totally forgot he was my boyfriend. I said, "Britney, just do the vocals. Don't be nervous. Don't be retarded like this." It ended up being fine, actually. At the very end, I got the very best vocals I've ever done.
Sometimes when you work with somebody that is close to you, it can be a total nightmare. But they can also get the best out of you. It sounds like that's what happened.
Spears: Right. He definitely pushed me.
Did you learn something new about him that you didn't know through this process?
Spears: He's very good at doing vocals. [Laughs]
Do you have plans to work together again?
Spears: Definitely, in the future. I'd love to.
I heard he wants to act, now that you were in this movie. Do you guys have plans to do something together onscreen?
Spears: That would be cool, maybe in the future. We haven't really thought of anything just yet. We'll see.
Is Justin your first love?
Spears: Actually, I had a love before him, but he's my first deep love, yeah. I had a young love, a puppy love, before him. He is definitely my first true love. I'm very much in love.
What are you talking about in the first single, "I'm a Slave 4 U"?
Spears: The Neptunes did the song, and it's really just about being a slave to music. Wanting to go out with girlfriends and just forgetting about everyone around and having a good time. It's very different and really funky.
You also cover Joan Jett's hit "I Love Rock 'n' Roll." Can we say that this album is going to have a little more of a rock feeling?
Spears: I think so, yeah. It definitely has more of a rock flair.
Does that mean you're moving out of the pop area?
Spears: Pop music is popular music. I'm just bringing pop music to a different level. It's always going to be pop music. That's what I love to do. I love to dance, and pop music incorporates that. I'm just bringing it to the next level. Trying. [Laughs]
How do you feel when the press and the critics use you as a touchstone in talking about some of the younger singers who've come out in the last few years?
Spears: I think 'cause we're all real young and we all have blond hair or whatever, they're going to say we're all like each other. But if they really look at our music and our talent, we're so different in so many ways. I think it's kind of flattering that they compare me to them. They all work very, very hard and are all very gifted and very talented.
Do you find it flattering to be referred to as the new Madonna?
Spears: Yeah!
What are the things you feel like you have in common with her?
Spears: I think that we have the same drive. When we want something, we get it. As far as our music and our talent goes, we're very different. Onstage we have the same drive, too. I just saw her show and she's just amazing. Britney was flawless. It was very inspirational for me, 'cause my [next tour] is about to come up. I have so many things I want to do after watching her. She's amazing, but I think we're very different in a lot of ways. It is flattering that they say we're alike.
And what things do you think are different?
Spears: Her whole personality is totally different than mine. We look different. We both sing pop music, but it's a different kind of pop music.
Your relationship with your mother is amazing, but you never talk about your father. Why?
Spears: Me and my father, we're just as close as me and my mom, but I think it's just something about women. [Mothers and daughters] have more of a connection or something. I'm really close to him, but I'm just a girly girl. I'll always be a daddy's girl, but he treats me like a baby sometimes. I feel more open with my mom. I think I can talk to her more. He's very overprotective of me.
You performed with Michael Jackson at his tribute concert. Did Michael contact you directly about joining him?
Spears: He did call me. He was like, "Hello, can I speak to Britney, please?" And I was like, "Who is this?" And he goes, "This is Michael Jackson." And I was like, "No, this is not. Who is this?" Michael Jackson calling your phone in the middle of the day?
He was like, "It's Michael. It's Michael Jackson." Finally, I was like, "Is this really him? I don't know!" I was like, "OK, how are you?" And he started talking to me more and I realized it was him! I'll never forget that moment, ever.
