1999 - Heart Op Saves Brian. by Frank Durham
STAR PERFORMERS... singer Brian Littrell with the other Backstreet Boys whose second album, Millennium, has sold five million copies BACKSTREET Boy teenage pop idol Brian Littrell has twice been faced with life-threatening heart dramas but he has survived miraculously.
Recently, the 24-year-old singer had to have open-heart surgery when doctors discovered that a congenital hole had grown to alarming proportions.
And when Brian was just five years old, an infection made his heart stop beating for 30 seconds. He says now: "I wasn't supposed to live long but I did. I look at that as a miracle. I've been singing ever since."
The latest drama began in November, 1997. Doctors spotted that the hole in Brian's heart was growing in a life-threatening way.
The doctors said they would have to carry out major surgery to repair the singer's heart and save his life.
But Brian didn't want to disappoint the band's army of young fans so he courageously decided to continue touring with the other four band members - 21-year-old A.J. McLean, Kevin Richardson, aged 27, Howie Dorough, 25, and Nick Carter, 19.
Then came the day, months later, when Brian had to face the knife. Still the gutsy singer put on a brave face.
But Brian knew only too well the risks involved in the heart operation. He recalls: "I told my mum a lot of things I never had the courage to say. I was telling her to take care of my dad."
Mother Jackie and Brian's girlfriend later told him how, when he was sedated ready for the operation, his tough attitude suddenly melted away. He explains: "They said that, when I was asked whether I was ready to go, I just started bawling."
When Brian successfully came through the operation, his courage was unrelenting. Just eight weeks after surgery, he was back performing on stage. Paramedics stood by with cylinders of oxygen at every concert in case he was taken ill.
A source said: "Because we knew how risky the operation was, when Brian went into hospital for surgery we spent a lot of time praying he wouldn't die. Everybody tried to stay strong for him.
"When Brian came back, we were all relieved. It was good to see him looking so healthy."
Soon after he came back Brian and the other Backstreet Boys recorded their second CD, called Millennium. So far it has sold a staggering five million copies.
