Viggo Mortensen looks like he's been around the block a few times. The lines in his face, the craggy smile, and the often pensive look in his eyes reveal a man with a past that has strayed beyond the cushy confines of movie sets and press junket hotels. "Viggo has credibility as a human being, which seems to be rare these days," director David Cronenberg says of his lead actor in A History of Violence. "I wanted a guy who you can't take your eyes off, but who also has that character-actor thing, which means he can be real."
Biography: Family, Childhood, Acting Career
Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr. was born on 20 October 1958, in Manhattan, New York, USA to a Danish father and American mother. He has two brothers, Charles and Walter. At age eleven, his parents divorced. Viggo spent his first years in Manhattan and the rest of his youth living in Argentina, Venezuela, and Denmark.

Viggo Mortensen attended Watertown High School and became a athlete and a very good student. After graduation St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, he moved to Denmark. In the early '80s, he returned to Manhattan. Viggo studied acting at Warren Robertson's Theatre Workshop and then embarked upon a stage career. He worked many odd jobs as dock worker, flower seller. He wrote poetries and short stories while working. He fell in love in 1982, and followed his girlfriend back to New York, hoping for a long romance and a writing career, but he got neither. Read more
